Shoreline's Second Annual Outdoor Movie Night - August 7

Admission is FREE and everyone is welcome. Gates open at 7:30 p.m.

'The perfect summer movie!' 'A hit the size of Bigfoot', acclaimed movie critics upon release of Harry and the Hendersons, filmed in Seattle and released by Universal Studios in the summer of 1987. On Saturday, August 7, Ballinger and North City Neighborhood Associations will delight a second generation of local moviegoers with this funny, touching, film shown on a large outdoor movie screen.

Harry and the Hendersons is a heartwarming story of a Seattle family on their way home from a camping trip, who accidentally run over a giant, wild creature that changes their lives. Chockfull of humor geared to both kids and grown-ups, those who found this movie endearing as kids are sure to enjoy it again as adults.

Admission is FREE and everyone is welcome. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. Bring a blanket, pillow or low chair to mark your spot. Dance to the lively music of North City's own Cajun Jamsters, or just enjoy visiting with family, friends and neighbors. There will be kid's crafts and activities to captivate the 10-and-under set, while behind the movie screen, City staff and teen volunteers from The Center, (Shoreline's eastside teen program) will host a pick-up game of kickball geared to tweens and teens.

You'll want to bring along a couple of bucks to spend at the Neighborhood Snack Bar on movie popcorn, candy and soda, and visit the Ballinger and North City info booth to sign up for the door prize drawing and pick up info on neighborhood happenings, Blockwatch, and emergency preparedness. You'll also need a blanket or lawn chair, extra layers of clothing for the evening chill, and a flashlight. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted.

For those who live nearby, walking is recommended. Neighbors who drive are encouraged to carpool. Parking is available with limited handicap access. Follow the signs from Ballinger Way NE and 25th Ave NE to the Alderwood Annex, 2545 NE 200th St, Shoreline WA. All movie-goers should plan to be seated by 8:45 p.m. The movie begins at dusk.

The August 7 event is the city's second-ever Outdoor Movie Night in celebration of National Night Out Against Crime—thanks to a Shoreline Neighborhood Mini-Grant.

Harry and the Hendersons is a 110-minute Steven Spielberg production, directed by William Dear, starring John Lithgow, Don Ameche, Lainie Kazan, and David Suchet. It's rated PG, although parents of small children should be aware that the film does contain mild violence and some swearing. Production services for Outdoor Movie Night are provided by Epic Events and Promotions of Bellingham.

Point Wells: owner of Snohomish County site holds open house at Shoreline Conference Center - September 23

Community comments sought for long-term development plans on September 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Shoreline Conference Center

The developer of a proposed mixed-used community at Point Wells will hold an open house Thursday, September 23 at the Shoreline Conference Center to share information and seek community comments in conjunction with an anticipated project application submittal to Snohomish County later this year. Hours for the event are 6:30 to 8 p.m. A first open house was held July 27 at the Edmonds Conference Center.

Point Wells is a 61-acre site located on Puget Sound in the Southwest corner of unincorporated Snohomish County. Developer BSRE Point Wells, LP is proposing a long-term shift from property's current petroleum operations to development as an urban center under Snohomish County's new zoning code.

BSRE Point Wells is initiating the series of community gatherings and briefings following the recent transfer of the site's ownership from Paramount of Washington, LLC. Both companies are holdings of the Alon Group, a company operating in the real estate, energy and retail sectors. BSRE Point Wells is affiliated with Blue Square Real Estate Ltd., another Alon company and a major developer of real estate.

BSRE will employ its extensive development resources for the proposed transformation of the site. According to Ze'ev Stein, Chief Executive Officer for Blue Square, the transfer of the property within the Alon group of companies matches the site's development potential with Blue Square's expertise in real estate. Shraga Biran, owner of the Alon Group, said the company's long-term vision is to create a community showcase of restored natural habitats, public amenities and transportation options. "Point Wells is a rare location, with a three-quarter mile stretch of beach and vistas of Puget Sound and the Olympic mountains. We envision a community that will dramatically enhance the site far beyond its current use and limitations," said Biran. Preliminary plans under consideration begin with a multi-year demolition of existing structures and environmental remediation of the site. If approved, construction and development at Point Wells could span more than a decade and would provide public access to the site's beach, existing pier and newly-created amenities.

Point Wells now hosts the marine fuels distribution center and asphalt facility of Paramount Petroleum Corporation and has no public access due to security restrictions.

Stein said management and representatives will continue the process of meeting with elected officials, community leaders and neighbors to discuss the project's benefits, preliminary design concepts and how to best integrate the development into surrounding communities. BRSE Point Wells will continue to work with the internationally recognized architectural firm of Perkins+Will to develop the initial site design concepts for Point Wells. Perkins+Will has extensive expertise and experience in designing environmentally sustainable projects. "Our team recognizes this is a location with unique characteristics," said Stein. "Our goal is to employ innovative development ideas and by protecting and restoring natural systems, conserving habitat and embracing nature, to bring a vision for the future in the transformation of Point Wells."

Porch Parties

"Meet the Neighbors" from Parade.com

When Jodi Lee, a librarian, bought a home in 2004 near downtown Columbus, Ohio, neighbors told her about "Wednesdays on the Porch." From the first week after Memorial Day through early fall, residents take turns hosting a weekly porch party for their neighbors. It is a way to get to know one another, exchange information, and keep in touch. Jodi was encouraged to host one. She followed the advice and, a few weeks later, on her own front porch, met her neighbor Bill Sieloff. Four years later, he became her husband. "The wedding was almost like a Wednesday on the Porch," Jodi recalls, "so many neighbors were there."

Doug Motz, one of the founders, estimates that since these Wednesdays began eight years ago, about 75 different families have held more than 130 porch parties in the neighborhood. "It's a time for sharing—opinions on new restaurants, how to find good painters and home-repair people—but it's primarily social," Motz says. "And the nice thing is, the hosts don't have to worry about cleaning up inside." For the rest of the article, see Porch Parties.

The Power of One Senior Volunteer Program

This program recruits and matches people 55 and older as volunteers in Shoreline public schools.

Syre Elementary is currently looking for volunteers to help out in its kindergarten classes. They could use help every day of the week.

Highland Terrace Elementary is working on launching a lunchtime homework help center and needs tutors and mentors who can provide support and encouragement to students who need it. They are looking for people who can give an hour at least once a week.

This is a great opportunity to get involved with the local school community, while helping kids who really need the support.

"Shoreline Area News" Launches, Seeks Volunteer Writers and Photographers

We have added a permanent link on our website to the Shoreline Area News under Community Tips.

From their website:
"The Shoreline Area News officially launched its website, Thursday, November 5, 2009, in response to the demise of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Enterprise edition. The News is located at www.ShorelineAreaNews.com and covers the cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Created by artist and designer Sonya Reasor, community activist Diane Hettrick, and Enterprise politics writer Evan Smith, the News hopes to be a central location for information for and about the two cities. Volunteer writers and photographers are welcome and residents are encouraged to send information about events and activities to: Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com"

And more details from Diane Hettrick:
"We are posting new information every day. The newest article goes to the front page, and to the appropriate tab. Remember to Refresh or Reload your web page each time you look or you won't see the newest articles. We are very excited about the News and see more possibilities for it every day. We want to thoroughly cover Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, but include things in surrounding areas that residents would want to participate in. Our art and technical editor is fabulous - take a look at the fair trade flyer - she did that.

We are looking for people to cover more sports. We have a couple of volunteers but there are a lot of sports in the area.

We will take articles from you - human interest stuff, things about Shoreline or LFP, an enthusiastic review of your favorite shop or restaurant. Here are things we would like to see: meeting notices for PTA's, meeting notices for neighborhood associations, personal reports from sporting events (with a picture of your kid - we don't care if s/he is the star or not!), church events open to the public, school activities (with a photo of whatever group with your kid front and center), wedding notices, engagements, baby announcements, anniversaries, military milestones and obituaries. Of course all of these with pictures - and yes, it's absolutely fair for obits to have a picture of the person when they were young and good-looking.

Send information for the News to Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com.

Please send photos, if you can. They don't have to be professional-grade - cell-phone photos look good. If you can turn it into a jpg it's good.

And it would be very good to have information after the event, with photos. Look at
the Day of Caring from Meridian Park neighborhood - perfect example. Just make sure that people are ok with having their photo on the web, and get names of people in the photo as well as the person who took the photo."
